Fulbright Fellow

Maria Sanchez-Ramos is a Fulbright Fellow enrolled in the Program in Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies at Penn's FQT Center in collaboration with Annenberg School for Communication. She is a PhD candidate in Communication and junior lecturer in the Department of Journalism I at the University of Seville (Spain), where she holds a FPU Fellowship financed by the Spanish Government.

Her work deals with the democratic implications of press coverage of violence against women from a media ethics approach, with an emphasis on sexual violence portrayal. The scholar has been awarded the Youth Prize of Scientific Culture by the City Council of Seville and the 6th Rosario Valpuesta Research Prize for her book The Andalusian press coverage of ‘The Wolf Pack’ Case. Sexual violence and journalistic ethics: approaches from the critical feminist perspective(2021).

During her predoctoral training period she has made several international stays at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, at the University of Havana, at University of Sacred Heart (PR) and at Penn. The PhD candidate has more than 180 hours of formal university lecturing and, in the Fall of 2022, she is teaching a course entitled “Gender and mass culture. Towards a feminist communication for social change” at University of the Sacred Heart (Puerto Rico).
