The Program in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies
The appointment to a term chair is a high honor in the University
and is an acknowledgement of a high level of productivity of a faculty
member. It gives the GSWS Program and the Alice Paul Center great pleasure to share with our community the news that Anne
M. Teitelman, PhD, CRNP has been appointed as the Patricia Bleznak Silverstein and Howard
A. Silverstein Endowed Term Chair in Global Women’s Health.
Dr. Teitelman’s research focuses on HIV prevention among
adolescents and in understanding intimate partner violence as an HIV risk factor.
She is currently developing an HIV prevention intervention for adolescent girls
with a history of partner abuse who attend family planning clinics. Dr.
Teitelman is interested in promoting health and equity of the girl child
internationally and in the role of primary care providers in health promotion
and advocacy. She is well known for her expertise in primary health care with
underserved populations and has been teaching advanced practice nurses for over
15 years. She challenges students to integrate research on health and illness
with an understanding of the community to hone their advanced clinical nursing
expertise. She currently practices at The Hospital of the University of
Pennsylvania in The Helen O. Dickens Center for Women’s Health.
The Patricia Bleznak Silverstein and Howard A. Silverstein Endowed Term Chair
in Global Women’s Health was created in June 2011 by the Howard A. Silverstein
Foundation. After having served as chair of the Board of Overseers of the
Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA), Patricia Bleznak Silverstein was
appointed to the School of Nursing’s Board of Overseers in the fall of 2010.
Previous to this, she had served as a lead volunteer for almost a year in
planning for the School of Nursing’s Healthy Cities: Healthy Women conference
that was held in New York City in May 2011. The School of Nursing sincerely appreciates the
generosity and support that Patricia Bleznak Silverstein and Howard A.
Silverstein have given to the School of Nursing and we in GSWS and APC along with the School of Nursing appreciate their
continuous commitment to the global health of women.
