Gender in the Classroom Breakfast and Panel Discussion

Wednesday, March 18, 2026 - 10:00am to 11:30am

Fisher-Bennett Hall, Room 135

This location is ADA accessible

In the month of March, we convene for a round-table discussion featuring not one but THREE stellar facilitators—Dr. Julia Alekseyeva (English), Dr. Rebecca Harmon, and Dr. Julia Heim—with the goal of unsettling the notion of 'women's day'/'women's month'/time period' as well as its broader assumptions about the role of gender in educational spaces. Taking a critical look at current classroom management practices, our facilitators will aim to address questions that puzzle many educators across disciplines: How does classroom interaction around gender affect student confidence and achievement? How are gender roles portrayed in textbooks, examples, visuals, and learning resources? Whose voices, stories, and perspectives are represented in the curriculum—and whose are missing? With your participation, we will attempt to open up the parameters of this discussion and look at the relationship between gender, sexuality, and classroom behaviour as a point of promise and possibility, from which we can begin to adapt our own teaching strategies. Because education is a fundamental human right that belongs to every body, every day of the year.

Breakfast will be served for registered attendees.

All graduate students and faculty are welcome; registration is not required but highly appreciated.

This departmental workshop counts toward the CETLI Teaching Certificate.
