This book talk will be a discussion among students, alumni, and community partners on the recent publication of "TAKEOVER: A Human Rights Approach to Housing." TAKEOVER is a collaboratively-written book that chronicles the 35-year political praxis of the Poor People’s Army (formerly the Kensington Welfare Rights Union), a nonviolent, poor-led anti-poverty movement that mobilizes political education, mutual aid, and tactical reclamation of publicly owned abandoned properties. In the talk, authors will discuss (1) approaches for community collaboration and especially co-authorship, and (2) what lessons might be learned from poor-led movements organizing outside of the State in this moment of crumbling welfare infrastructures.
