Managing Identity-Based Conflict in the Classroom

In our classrooms, we all strive to create an environment in which students have the opportunity to respectfully discuss difficult questions, many of which require uneven risks for the students in the room. In addition to focusing on strategies for maintaining respect while discussing difficult topics, this workshop will focus on strategies for responding to student contributions to class discussions that willfully or accidentally disrupt this culture of respect. We will focus on approaches to de-escalating conflict between students and making resources available to any students who might have been affected by a disrespectful comment, as well as to students who have introduced harmful language into the classroom. We will also discuss strategies for approaching topics that can often generate conflict in order to give students tools for speaking both substantively and respectfully about these topics within and outside of class.
