Work in Progress: Eva Del Soldato, "If Aristotle were alive. The history of an expression"

Tuesday, March 21, 2017 - 9:30am

Please join us for a Work-In-Progress lunch with Eva Del Soldato, Italian Studies. We will be discussing Dr. Del Soldato's paper:  If Aristotle were alive. The history of an expression.

Discussant: Ann Moyer, History

Discussant: Emily Wilson, Classical Studies

‘If Aristotle were alive’ is a kind of counterfactual imagination which enjoyed large circulation in the early modern period in the most different fields and contexts. This paper highlights some of the most significant uses of the expression and its shifting meanings, focusing on authors like Luther, Ramus, Vives, Galileo, Kepler, Goldoni, and many others. It will show that the history of the expression mirrors the parallel histories of early modern Aristotelianism and anti-Aristotelianism, while emphasizing the  persistent influence of the principle of authority – even in paradoxical forms – throughout Europe until the dawn of Enlightenment

Location: GSWS Conference Room, 3810 Walnut Street
