Please join us for a pedagogy seminar led by Joan DeJean, Trustee Professor of Romance Languages. 

"I’ll take up the question of women’s almost total invisibility in the movement we know as the Enlightenment by using documents of various kinds: correspondence, the transcript of an 18th-century trial, documents from the archives of the Parisian police, an 18th-century novel as well as 18th-century editions of that novel. 

Our discussion will be centered on the question of domestic violence.  And to center it in a pedagogical question as well, I’ll talk about why I try to expose undergraduates to as many different types of contemporary sources as possible." 

There will be two short pieces to read in advance.
