Please join us Friday February 13th from 12-1:30pm in Cohen 436 for a Global Gender Works-in-Progress Seminar featuring Toorjo Ghose (SP2).
"Dust from her doorstep: The sex worker movement in Sonagachi, India"
Toorjo Ghose will be sharing a book proposal on the sex worker movement in India. He'll be engaging with postcolonial theories about civil and political society to examine how this social movement positions itself in the claims-making landscape in India - namely, how it launches initiatives from marginalized political claims-making and staking territory (described as "political society" by postcolonial scholars such as Partha Chatterjee) but eventually ends up in traditional civil society space.
Faculty Respondents: Philippe Bourgois (Anthropology) and Projit Mukharji (History and Sociology of Science)
