Please join us for a GSWS Graduate Student Pedagogy Seminar with Professor Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw (History of Art) who will be leading us in a discussion of "How to Respectfully Engage Ideologically Problematic Scholarship in the Classroom."
Dr. DuBois Shaw writes: "In order to present a topic or historical moment in a well-rounded way in the classroom, we must frequently present and teach material that is at odds with our own personal sense of social justice, human rights, and/or spiritual beliefs. This can be extremely challenging and frustrating, or it can be empowering and liberating. This seminar focuses on the difficulties of teaching material (and students) that you may find ideologically repugnant, offensive, or even dangerous (ie racist, misogynistic, or homophobic materials). Strategies for critical engagement and for maintaining a productive classroom environment will be shared, as well as suggestions for ways to reconcile your own beliefs with those of the differing institutional structures that you may find yourself teaching within."
