Pedagogy Seminar: "What is Intersectionality, Anyway?" with Salamishah Tillet (English/Africana Studies)

Tuesday, April 19, 2016 - 9:30am to 1:30pm

Please join us for a pedagogy seminar entitled "What Is Intersectionality, Anyway?” featuring Salamishah Tillet (English and Africana Studies). Intersectionality, the term coined over thirty years ago by legal scholar Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw to describe the gender and racial no man’s land that women of color, particularly African American women, experienced in American jurisprudence, has now become a catch all phrase for both multiple oppression and a multilayered identity politics. But what is an intersectional framework? And how does one effectively teach in a classroom? In this workshop, Salamishah Tillet will talk about the history of the term and its pedagogical and political value today, her own experiences teaching through this lens, and offer some strategies for effectively and sincerely practicing it in the classroom.

The seminar will take place on the second floor seminar room of 3810 Walnut Street. Please RSVP below to reserve your lunch.
